Please welcome The Stag Team 2012/13
Alexandra Wilks (Editor) - editor@thestagsurrey.co.uk
![]()
The Stag is whatever you want it to be. It's written by Surrey Students, and therefore, it reflects our thoughts, feelings and opinions. That's why I love it so much. And that's why I am so happy to be the Editor. My name's Alexandra Wilks and I'm a final year English Literature and Creative Writing student. I've been involved heavily with The Stag my whole time at Surrey, from Features Writer to Literature Editor to Editor. I'm the one with the loud laugh and the ever changing hair colours, come and talk to me because I'd love to meet some new talent for the paper.
Hannah Robers-Owen (Deputy Design) - design@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hii I’m Hannah, The Stag’s deputy editor in charge of design for the coming year! I’m from sunny Swanage (no I don’t have 11 toes, I’m not a mutant) and am a second year English lit student here at Surrey. Last year I was a designer on The Stag so I’m really chuffed to have
beennupgraded! I’m a big fan of making things look nice and am a slight perfectionist, so this year I’ll be trying to make the paper the best it’s ever looked. A snippet of info about me; I’m into all things music, a keen reader (hence the English degree) and not many people know that I’m also a sailing instructor! Hoping to see as many new faces as possible becoming involved with the paper this year, so come introduce yourselves or drop one of us an email. Cheers then!
Becky Richmond (Deputy marketing) - marketing@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hello! I'm Becky and I'm a second year English Literature student from Essex! (No, I'm not like the people from TOWIE)!
I'm your new Deputy Editor for Marketing and I'm so excited to be part of The Stag this year! After writing for the Literature team last year I was eager to become more involved in the production side of the paper and hopefully start writing for some other sections! Marketing is a new adventure to me, so hopefully I can get all you lovely readers to carry on reading our lovely newspaper and get some shiny new readers too!
Rachel Thomason (News) - news@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hi, my name’s Rachel and I’m a second year English Literature student from Cambridgeshire. I am your new News Editor for The Stag! It’s
pretty self explanatory that I love to read and write! I also enjoy horse riding and am on the Equestrian Club committee this year. My friends will probably describe me as a real girly girl but something that not many people will know about me is that I have recently taken up the drums and I love it!
This year for The Stag, I’ll be introducing a new feature to the section called ‘Comment…’ so watch out for me around campus looking for your views on the latest news! Plus, I’ll continue to bring you a round up of the latest local, national and international news so you can get your news fix fast. Enjoy!
Ellis Taylor (Features) - features@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hello all and welcome to features! I’m Ellis, a level 2 English Literature student and a self-confessed magazine junkie. I’m the Features Editor
and on-going fashion columnist, so basically I get people to write interesting stuff, then I go shopping and write about it*. This beautiful section is full of ramblings, advice, moaning and student relevant topics…basically, it’s awesome. I hope you enjoy the section over the next year, and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to get involved!
*I promise I actually do more work than that.
Aloha, lovely readers! The Science & Technology section this year will be brought to you by the science and tech team and me. As a second year physicist (and as your editor) I will do my utmost to include news from all the sciences without too much bias, as well as news from the world of technology. With a team of trusty writers at my side, expect consistent content each week covering all aspects of science on and off campus.
FELLOW RESEARCHERS, tell us about your research (sciencey or not), we're accepting any short pieces (~150 words). Let the campus know about what's going on here.
Shalini Thondrayen (Societies) - societies@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hello beautiful readers, I’m Shalini Thondrayen, the new Societies Editor for The Stag. A brief low-down about me: I’m currently going into my third year as an English Literature with Creative Writing student, whilst doing my second year as Marketing Director for LitSoc. As you may have already figured, you are at ‘thee’ hotspot for societies’ news, events and updates where I hope you will be left feeling in the know, and thus ravenous for more juicy information.
Candice Ritchie (Film) - film@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hi, I’m Candice and I’m your new Film Editor! I am an English Literature with Creative Writing student. Last year I was a Copy Editor and
writer for the film section, and I just couldn’t leave, so here I am with a more involved role! Whether it’s rom-com, horror or an action-packed fiasco, I never tire of my love for films. This year I’m on placement as the Editorial Assistant for OPP Media, meaning I’ll be experiencing what it’s really like to work with a magazine! Combined with working for The Stag, I’m hoping this year I’ll learn the ins-and-outs of InDesign, become semi-pro at editing, ten-fold better at writing, and my journalism dream will be ever-greater!
Anne Giles (Sport) - sport@thestagsurrey.co.uk
My name is Anna Giles and I am the sports editor for 2012/2013. I’m a second year English Literature student, and am also captain for the
First Ladies Tennis Team here at Surrey. I’ve always played a wide variety of sports (or at least tried to), and have been lucky enough to also enjoy equestrian sports from a young age.
The London 2012 Olympics provided us with the highest level of sporting success ever seen in this country, and there has never been a better time to get involved in a sport than now. I personally believe that once you’ve seen Surrey Sports Park, it becomes very clear that the opportunity to train and represent Team Surrey is not only a fantastic way to meet new people and keep fit, but is also a huge privilege.
Becky Worley (Music) - music@thestagsurrey.co.uk
My name is Rebecca Worley and I am the new music editor for The Stag. I am a third and final year studying English Literature with Creative
Writing. As well as writing I enjoy listening to an eclectic range of music by old and new bands alike, and so this role combines two of my passions. Music has the power to make people laugh, cry, sing, dance and take their own meanings from someone else’s lyrics. Opinion will always be divided over which music is best, but I would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t love and connect with any kind of music at all, so hopefully my section will have something to interest everyone somewhere along the line. Thanks for reading!
Emily Smart (Literature) - literature@thestagsurrey.co.uk
My names Emily, a second year studying English Literature which is quite relevant considering what my section is about. I was a writer for the
section last year and could not imagine myself not being its editor for this current year. I am greatly looking forward to making the section into one that will intrigue not only Literature students but those who do other subjects but also have a love to read. The section will consist of interviews, reviews, significant and controversial news and the column which will look to give a more personalised view on Literature from members of the team.
What many people will not know about me is that this summer I was involved in an eight week, unpaid placement (that bit sucked) at Capita and gained a qualification in Investor Relations. I am always looking to reach my maximum potential and not settle for anything less.
I love meeting new people so do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to get involved!
Tiffany Stoneman (Dance & Theatre) dancetheatre@thestagsurrey.co.uk
I’m Tiffany Stoneman, the new Dance & Theatre Editor, and am currently in my second year on the uni’s Theatre Studies course (yes, it does exist and no, I’m not GSA!). I’ve been involved in theatre journalism for two years now, one with a website, and one with the Stag, so have gained some experience within the world of artistic criticism and writing. As well as this, I regularly work the Ivy Arts Centre Box Office, and so have been treated to a wide range of live arts presented by the uni and outside companies. I’m really looking forward to building up the Stag’s Dance & Theatre section, and bringing live arts on campus into the limelight, whilst working closely with student activities and societies.
Justine Crossan (Opinion and Analysis) opinion@thestagsurrey.co.uk
I am an International Politics student from London, Camden. I am the editor of the Opinion & Analysis section of The Stag which concerns current affairs internationally and
domestically . I am aiming to give a balanced and well rounded political opinion so The Stag audience are never told how to think but allowed to make their own choices on what is happening around the world. I wish to bring culture and interesting articles to The Stag to get your mind racing once a week, being from an area like Camden I am surrounded by controversial characters and I'm sure this will come across in some of the articles just to spice things up.
Tess Morgan (Photography) - photos@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hi my name is Tess! I study English Literature and I will be your Head photo editor and Features Copy Editor :)
Christina Morman (copy editor) - copyteam@thestagsurrey.co.uk

Hey, my name’s Tina. I’m a second year English Literature and Creative Procrastination student and I've decided that I’m not going to leave the lovely people at The Stag alone just yet; I was part of the design team last semester and decided to come back for more this time round as the copy-editor for our News section. Originally I'm from a small village in Gloucestershire (yes, it's the West Country, yes I have the accent, no I don't have a brand new combine harvester) and like everyone else I've got some guilty geeky quirks ... that I probably shouldn't admit to here! (We all have them). So I'm going to be helping out with the copy-editing and I'm also going to be pitching in with the design process whenever I can help. Looking forward to a second year with The Stag – let’s have a good one guys!
Sophie Vickery (Copy Editor) - copyteam@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hi I’m Sophie, a second year student, studying English Literature. I began writing for The Stag a year ago with regular articles in the Features
and Literature Section. This year I will also be writing for the News team and embracing the role of copy editor for the Literature, Film and Science & Technology sections. I have fallen in love with Guildford, Surrey University and its students and therefore I enjoy writing for The Stag as a way to tie them altogether!
Hannah Wann (Copy Editor) - copyteam@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Hi I'm Hannah, a Features writer and a newly appointed copy editor for The Stag. I'm a second year English with Creative Writing student
and an avid tea-drinker, magazine-reader, footballer and shopper. I'm also a bit of a Twitter addict - all the best people are on there! - and food-obsessed. Features is great because you can write about pretty much whatever you fancy and, being a slight perfectionist, copy editing fulfills my need to make everything flawless.
Emma Fleming (Copy Editor) - copyteam@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Heya! My name is Emma Fleming and I have just begun my first year of studying English Literature here at Surrey. I am an East London baby; therefore I am a right newbie to both the university and Guildford! Although they say ‘home is where the heart is’, I have fallen heads over heels with the people and campus of Surrey. I was thrilled to be voted in by other students as Copy Editor for the Opinion and Analysis section of the paper, and cannot wait to get to work on the Stag. I wanted to say a quick thank you to those who did vote for me because I have a love of reading and writing and believe this is the perfect role for me! I will try my hardest to ensure this section reads smoothly for both the Stag team and for yourselves.
Samantha J. Murray (Web Editor) - web@thestagsurrey.co.uk
Having spent my placement year in Cape Town, South Africa working as the Junior Journalist for The Cape Times I have experience in
editing and managing the web..and love all things journalism!
I'll be in charge of managing The Stag website and USSU Stag features.. but more importantly making sure everything looks pretty!
