‘The Stag’ is the official magazine of the students at the University of Surrey. We aim to provide content covering a wide range of areas from student life to current affairs. We form one of three medias at surrey, the others being StagTV and Stag Radio.
We aim to release three high quality printed magazines throughout the year that cover university life and topics relevant to students.
The Stag dates back to 1967 when the newspaper ‘Bare Facts’ was first established. The ‘University of Surrey’ was back then, known as ‘Battersea Polytechnic’ and this one page newsletter was established to ensure good communication with students as the campus transitioned to Guildford as we know it today.
‘Bare Facts’ re-branded to ‘The Stag’ in late 2008 and transitioned from a newsletter to a magazine. In 2016 we achieved editorial independence from the Students Union enabling us to provide challenging and effective journalism ‘for the students, by the students.’
If you are interested in writing for us or playing another role in the society don’t hesitate sending an email to:

We are always looking for writers, photographers, designers and web developers!

Isobel Kavanagh
I’m Isobel, this year’s Editor-in-Chief and President of The Stag. I am a second-year studying English Literature and Creative Writing, and joined the magazine as a writer last year. As well as complementing my degree, The Stag has been a wonderful way of meeting kindred spirits, something I hope to bring forward for our members old and new taking part this year.
Outside of my role, I am a film and theatre enthusiast (probably explains our decision to bring in a new Arts and Entertainment section this year!) and I love learning languages too.
I am really looking forward to another great year at The Stag, and if you’re wondering whether to send us a pitch, the answer is always YES.

Maisie Holcombe
Hi everyone! I’m Maisie, a second-year English Literature student and the new Vice President and Deputy Editor of The Stag. I also manage most of social media for The Stag so it’s likely me you’ll find in the dms!
When I’m not writing for The Stag, you’ll always find me on the tennis or squash courts (I’d definitely give Andy Murray a run for his money).
I love going out and meeting new people so I cannot wait to meet you all, both new and existing members, at our socials and events this year! See you all in September

Rosie Willoughby
I’m studying Media and Communications, and this year I’ll be editing the culture section alongside Rachel. I’m a huge nerd when it comes to theme parks and my favourites from film/tv right now are Knives Out and The Imagineering Story. I’m so excited to hear from more writers this year, so drop me a message if you’re interested in pitching something: no idea is too niche!

Robyn
My name is Robyn and I am a third year in English Literature with Creative Writing. The Stag has helped me to find my passion for journalism, and I want to help other people pursue their love of writing or to try something new. I love talking about films in particular – anything animated goes straight on my watchlist!

Tasha
Hi everyone! I’m going into my second year of my English Literature degree. I’m so excited to be a part of the Stag, gain some experience and be a part of the team! I can’t wait to meet you all!

Nell
Hiya! I’m Nell, I’m a second year English Literature student and it’s going to be an absolute pleasure being our Sports Editor this year!
Working for The Stag and alongside a great team will hopefully give me some insight into working within an editorial team (I’m hoping this will help me in the future!). I’ve got a passion for Journalism and if you see me on the BBC one day, I’ll give you a free pass to say you knew me at university.

Betsy Goodfellow
Hi everyone, I’m Betsy, I study English Lit & I’m hoping to work in publishing after uni, but I’m really excited to be features editor this year! I can usually be found listening to Taylor Swift, reading something for my degree, or aimlessly scrolling through TikTok (I might be a little addicted)!

Kate Ukiah

Henrique Salgado
My name’s Henrique and I’m a second year student doing Human Resources Management. I am originally from Portugal and moved to the UK for university. I like to spend my free time writing, gaming and playing the piano. The topics I’m mostly interested in are spirituality, psychology, philosophy and politics.
